Luz’s Story

Luz had always been a spectacular cook. She loved trying new recipes, using unique ingredients to make culinary masterpieces. She began living in an increasingly blurry world, her vision deteriorating until even familiar faces became hard to recognize.  Without health insurance, the cataract surgery she needed seemed impossibly out of reach. She poured her savings into paying out-of-pocket for surgery on one eye. But clarity came with a cost: she fell behind on her rent. Another surgery was scheduled just a month out, bringing her total medical expenses to something unreachable. 

The choice between sight and shelter shouldn't exist, but for Luz, it was devastatingly real. Luz wasn’t just supporting herself-her daughter, Maria, was living with her while awaiting a liver transplant. She was the sole provider for a household where medical crisis was a constant. She was caught in the impossible calculus of poverty: which basic need do you sacrifice to meet another?
